Job Title: Youth Basketball Referee Department: DPW-Parks Recreation

Compensation: Per league age group – $15.25, $19.00, $22.75 per game (Ch. 7 Ord.)

Summary: Monitor and officiate youth basketball games.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Arrive on site 15 mins before the schedule game start time
2. Greet and introduce self to both teams coaches
3. Inspect players for appropriate gear ? tied sneakers, tucked in uniform shirts, jewelry, and mouth guards as required by division
4. Hold a pre-game meeting mid-court with team captains and or coaches as time allows to clarify any questions, boundary lines, and determine starting sides
5. Monitor play for excessive roughness, rule violations, fouls and call fairly for both teams.
6. Provide instruction to players and coaches at lower divisions as seems appropriate
7. Follow the play physically up and down so as to have a good view of the action.
8. Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in all situations especially when others are becoming agitated. Address remarks to coaches rather than fans.
9. You are the one person in control of the game. You decide if the game needs to stop due rough play, player, coach or spectator behavior or other concerns
10. Must provide a report by phone, or in writing if requested, of any player coach or spectator whose behavior is un-sportsman like, is asked to leave the field or is disruptive of the game.
11. Must complete application, interview and provide school approved work papers and all requested documents.
12. Attend mandatory basketball referee training

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities over other employees

Education and/or Experience:
1. Experience playing basketball in recreation leagues or trained as a physical education teacher or in a related area sufficiently to be knowledgeable of the rules of basketball at the youth level.
2. Experience engaging children in play or sports in a positive manner.
3. Minimum ages: 16 years of age for referees.

Language Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in small groups and under pressure. Must be able to read and speak in English. Ability to speak another language is an asset.
