Position Purpose/Summary

Provide assistance to the Adoption Center veterinarian who oversees all animal health related matters for the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center. The veterinary assistant has the technical skills and work experience necessary to work independently and the patience and professional attitude to be part of a team. This position requires experience in surgery, the ability to inject and intubate, to restrain large and/or fractious animals, and to perform calmly and professionally in a very busy work setting and/or in the event of an emergency. This is an 18.5 hour per week position.

Essential Functions

Understand and proactively address disease prevention, control and eradication for shelter population.
Performing routine health screenings/wellness examinations on animals cared for by the shelter and determining the recommended individual animal treatment protocols.
All aspects of veterinary care (i.e., wellness exams, sick/injured exams, fluid therapy, nursing care, surgery, pre- and post-operative care, emergency care).
Animal restraint, including work with large dogs (over 70 pounds) and feral cats.
Animal treatment (i.e. nursing care, injections, fluid therapy, etc.).
Venipuncture, IV catheters, intubation, anesthesia monitoring
Customer service, dealing with varied public including pet owners, animal rescuers, volunteers and AdoptionCenter staff.
Paperwork and keeping detailed records of surgeries performed.
Disinfecting and sanitizing clinic and equipment routinely.
Maintaining and cleaning clinic and equipment routinely.
Performing related work as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work well and communicate effectively with the public and volunteers.
Ability to work effectively and independently.
Knowledge of animal handling skills.
General knowledge of animal welfare issues.

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited program two or four year program
Two years of practical veterinary assistant experience in a fast paced setting
