Special Education Teacher
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited institution
2. MA special education license or
Special education license or equivalent issued by another state or
Documented completion of approved undergraduate or graduate program in special education
And successful passing of the Communications and Literacy Skills MTEL within the first year of employment.
3. Experience working with students with severe disabilities.
4. Familiarity with IEP process and reporting
5. Passion for teaching
6. Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students
7. Experience working in an urban setting, preferred
8. Experience working with diverse student populations, preferred
9. Skills in managing challenging student behaviors strongly preferred
10. Ability to read, interpret, and apply student performance data to instructional planning and execution
11. Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills

REPORTS TO:

Chief Academic Officer, House Administrator or Designee

JOB GOAL:

To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning learning environment in which students can access and make progress towards Massachusetts standards-based curriculum and develop social and emotional skills in order to participate successfully in society. To work collaboratively with all school staff in order to implement student Individualized Education Plans. Provide a safe and supportive educational environment for all students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Serves as a moderate special education teacher for students in inclusion classrooms
– Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
– Ensures that modifications and accommodations are created and implemented as outlined in the IEP.
– Promotes and maintains positive communication with families by providing parent outreach, updates on student progress, and assisting in special education and transitioning events for students and families.
– Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students and employs a variety of instructional techniques and media.
– Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
– Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
– Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
– Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
– Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested.
– Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department leaders, evaluates their job performance.
– Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
– Attend staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
– Formulate, write and implement Individual Education Plans
– Organize and implement an instructional program that meets the developmental level and unique learning style of diverse learners
– Create a positive educational environment for all students using a multi-tiered system of supports
– Manages the classroom to maintain a safe, secure and effective learning environment by providing a high degree of structure, clear expectations and consistency. Implements expectations and consequences as appropriate for each student as outlined in behavior management plan
